About Us

Meiji University Global COE (Center of Excellence) Program for the Formation and Development of Mathematical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis at Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences (MIMS) is dedicated to education and research that bridges mathematics and complex phenomena found in various scientific fields.

i. Goals

The ultimate goal is to create an internationally renowned education and research center in Mathematical Sciences, which bridges mathematics and complex phenomena through mathematical modeling and analysis.  In particular, we have the following goals.

In research, we strive to:

  • Develop extraction models to elucidate the essence of complex phenomena
  • Conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research between mathematicians and scientists in other fields investigating complex phenomena
  • Construct innovative models to clarify non-equilibrium and time-series phenomen

Our education goals are to:

  • Foster young talented individuals to become experts in mathematical modeling and analysis
  • Nurture human resources with outstanding mathematical skills
  • Bridge the gap between mathematics and scientific fields involving complex phenomena

ii. Importance

Due to recent advances in science and technology, vast amounts of precise data can be easily obtained, but determining the significance as well as the important relationships of the data remains a critical issue in the 21st century. Amalgamating mathematics and science has been difficult, especially in fields trying to elucidate complex, non-linear phenomena such as neural coding, weather patterns, group behavior, economic fluctuations, etc. This difficulty has led Meiji University to establish MIMS. However, establishing MIMS is just the first step in becoming a world class Mathematical Sciences hub.

Current mathematical models do not take advantage of recent technological advances. Thus, our Global COE Program aims to conduct research to develop innovative mathematical models to extract the essence of complex phenomena as well educate talented young researchers so that they can apply these concepts to solve 21st century problems. Hence, our Global COE Program will serve as a bridge between mathematics and scientific fields involving complex phenomena.

iii. Future Vision

There are high expectations for our Global COE Program not only in terms of its contribution in extracting the essence of complex phenomena through mathematical modeling and analysis, but also in terms of its contribution to Meiji University and society. The vision is that in the next five years, our Global COE Program will be a pioneer in discovering the essence of complex phenomena, such as weather patterns, economic cycles, and intricate biological systems. In addition, as we maintain the impeccably high standards of individual researchers, our Global COE Program will evolve into a premiere center, which trains and nurtures bright young researchers, who are capable of leading fields related to Mathematical Sciences. Moreover, our Global COE Program as part of MIMS will be known as an international hub and world leader in Mathematical Sciences, especially for our advances and innovations in mathematic modeling and analysis. By achieving the milestones above, we will help Meiji University achieve its future vision as a global leader in research and education as well as contribute to society.
